Be A Hero

Art needs a home. Art needs to live. Art needs you.

“Be A Hero” treats art as a vulnerable living creature threatened by indifference, gatekeeping and economic drought. Written for the 2009 BUY ART campaign, the prose poem rejects narrow definitions of worthy art and invites ordinary people to support the functional, wearable, tiny, strange or imperfect work that speaks to them.

Art does not require definition. But Art does need YOU.

The Buy Art campaign is a movement to sensitize consumers of the need to support the creation of Art, in all its forms, especially now, when this delicate and endangered creature is most vulnerable.

Art is a luxury when money trees are in full flower and a gross frivolity when economic drought brings plague and taxes.

Art is in constant danger, from critics who, like frigid great-aunt spinsters, sweep aside the magic and wonder; from patrons who feed it till it is fat and stupid, glazed and sated in confinement, then parade it around on a diamond studded leash in polite company; from charlatans and posers who slink between, sucking authenticity from within; from intellectuals whose definitions splinter the herd while tightening the noose, squeezing the life out: miniscule, particulate drops of insignificance.

Art needs a hero.

Art needs YOU.

Art does not need critics for it to exist, nor does it need patrons for it to exist. Art does not require definition and the charlatans and posers who pretend to speak for art can all go to hell.

But Art does need YOU. And, you need Art.

But, maybe you don’t need big art, fat art, or even important art. Maybe you need simple art, tiny art or art so ugly that it’s kinda cute. Maybe you need functional art, wearable art, “lite” local art or anime.

Whatever it’s form, you do need art. And Art needs you.

Art needs a home, it needs to be loved or at least liked a little, and, it needs money to live. So, although there’s a drought on and the money tree is withering, at least you have the root, and it will spring.

So, buy art, feed art…or you might as well kill art for food.
