  • SIIM IS AN IDEA | SIIM World

Learn the story behind SIIM—how one woman’s global journey turned into a brand rooted in culture, curiosity, creative freedom, and wearable design. DO YOU KNOW SIIM? WHO IS SIIM? Jamaica is more than reggae and fast runners. SIIM is the story of a different kind of Jamaican: born in Kingston, but built for the world. From multiracial roots to global runway dreams, SIIM is redefining what it means to be Jamaican—and where Jamaican fashion can go. Tap through to hear more. SIIM... ...IS AN IDEA Tell me how it go THREE QUESTIONS WITH SIIM Q: So SIIM is an idea. But what exactly is that idea? A: That idea is Jamaica - but not the commercial Jamaica… this is more of an empirical quality… not a look, not a sound, but a feeling, a way of being… and what being Jamaican means. Q: What would you say is the essence of Jamaican-ness? A: Bwoooy! I would have to say contradiction! We are energetic and volatile, but we can also be lazy; Yet when we work, we work very hard! But we nah slave for anybody, still. We are creative and subversive; We laugh a lot but we doh ramp; Most importantly, Jamaicans are not confined by anyone else's definition of reality. I feel like this is a form of selfishness that makes us single minded (the same thing that mek di taxi man cut you off in traffic is the same drive that pushes our athletes past their competition). This is our drive to beat all odds, to try things that seem impossible - and succeed (or fail and try again). We strive to be the best - even at being bad. It's what makes the world cheer for us, respect us, fear us and want to be like us. Jamaicans empower. We inspire hope – we are the little nation that did! We bring the flava! Ah it dat! Q: So is there one word to describe Jamaican-ness? A: No! It’s not one thing – It can’t be one thing! Jamaican-ness is like a dense fabric of sensory and cultural threads. And this is a fabric that enfolds and engulfs you. Then the dye runs on your skin when you sweat. It stains your skin and your clothes. It’s hard to get it off. It grows on you. But... you know what? It looks kinda cool. Then other people want it too.... JAMAICAN-NESS IS A STICKY IDEA! And that is what SIIM is about. Ok... so you probably want to know what all dat have to do with clothes, right? Well... its a loooong story, that started with a journey... Read about it here.

Meet the visionaries behind SIIM’s creative world—artists, stylists, and makers who bring each project to life through meaningful collaboration. SIIM IS... A TEAM Once upon a time SIIM was a person. Now, SIIM is a collective. Our values are still the same - Jamaican to the core! But today, with collaborative effort and a broader vision and mission, SIIM is looking towards a future where Jamaican culture is ubiquitous. Let's call this reverse colonization through creativity. Meet some key collaborators... SiiM SiiM 1/3 M.Simone Clarke (SiiM) Creative Consultant, Big-Head-Gyal M. Simone Clarke (aka SiiM) embodies a unique blend of skills in art, architecture, fashion design, event production and branding. Her multifaceted career not only demonstrates her versatility but also underscores her ability to think creatively across various contexts. From crafting elegant clothing inspired by Caribbean heritage to designing signature events and providing art direction for a variety of local and major international film projects, SiiM's diverse experiences enrich her creative approach. Her ability to seamlessly transition between disciplines enables her to tackle challenges with fresh perspectives and innovative solutions, making her a dynamic creative force. SiiM is Jamaican-born of a truly multi-ethnic background. She is a descendant of African slaves, Indian indentured workers, Hungarian refugees and Scottish immigrants. She studied Architecture in Canada, but discovered her passion for fashion during a transformative journey through Asia and Australia. In 1991, she launched the [original] SiiM fashion line, blending Caribbean heritage with modern design elements. Her "Butterflies & Hummingbirds" Collection gained recognition across the Caribbean for its exotic charm and craftsmanship. In 2003, SiiM ventured into event production with a groundbreaking fashion show for her line titled "the drums are restless tonight…", marking the beginning of her career in entertainment architecture. For the past two decades, she has designed signature events, provided set design for TV shows, and offered interior design services for prominent corporate entities in Jamaica. With a passion for travel, food and culture, her diverse experiences contribute to her unique creative perspective. SiiM is based in Kingston, Jamaica. Stefan Clarke Photographer, Sculptor, Joker Born in St. Andrew, Jamaica, Stefan Clarke is a force to be reckoned with in the Jamaican art scene, producing work that boldly stands outside the frame of what would traditionally be considered Jamaican art. A graduate of Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, Clarke’s work is a bold challenge to societal norms, initiating discussions about identity, sexuality and religion. He’s not just an artist. He’s also an educator, constantly pushing the boundaries of what art can be and achieve. Clarke’s artistic journey is as diverse as his creations. From group exhibitions like “Not for Sale” (2002) to “Hybridization” (2023), his work has graced numerous platforms. He’s also received commissions for sculptural works at Utech University, including “Bird of Peace,” “Trinity,” and “Atlas.” Clarke’s controversial work has also been exhibited at several exhibitions in the National Gallery of Jamaica. STEFAN STEFAN 1/5 John Campbell Painter, Bonsai Enthusiast and model? John Alexander Campbell is an artist from Kingston, Jamaica. After high school, his artistic career began as an airbrush artist for several t-shirt companies specializing in airbrushed designs. Armed with this experience he returned to fine art and painting. His unique style has developed and evolved over two decades of work. Today, John uses no brushwork nor water in his paintings. His vehicle of choice is vodka which allows for richer, more expressive colour with varying degrees of movement and viscosity, along with the critical element of unpredictability. John states that his works depict the varying aspects of life and all its passions: the good, the bad and the indifferent, all told from a very personal perspective. For him, each piece is an exploration of the human condition and journey. He attended the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in 1992, where he majored in Painting and minored in Printmaking. Starting in 1996 John spent 18 months as the Artist in residence at the Avant-Garde Gallery in Portland, Jamaica and he counts this among his formative experiences. He has exhibited in both group and solo shows in Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, the USA and the UK. John is the first male face of the current SIIM campaign and a regular contributor to the conversations from which SIIM designs originate. JOHN JOHN 1/5 CHARL CHARL 1/6 Charl Baker Designer, Stylist, Muralist and... A versatile artist, born in Canada to Jamaican parents, and shaped by Jamaica, Charl embraces multiple creative roles as a designer, stylist, and muralist. Believing that art is the essence of her being, she channels her passion into various mediums, finding inspiration in both visual and performing arts. Charl's studio, Studio 969, serves as a platform for her boundless creativity, whether she's styling for films and music videos or crafting unique pieces for clients. Viewing life as an ever-changing canvas, she transforms fabric, jewelry, and recycled materials into captivating artworks, including her signature "Trees of Life." With notable credits in several feature films (No Time to Die), short films (FeverDream, Good Country People), music videos (Stephen Marley, Chronixx, Tarrus Riley) and various high profile mural projects in Kingston, Charl's artistic voice resonates across diverse platforms, leaving an indelible mark on each endeavor. For over a decade, he has been juggling between two homes: Kingston and New York City. After apprenticeships with industry giants Steve Hellerstein and Brad Guice; his first photographic work in the ‘Big Apple’ began with Essence Magazine and Capitol/Blue Note Records. Always an advocate for Jamaican culture, he sought to become a catalyst of change in what he often perceived as mediocre or insufficient photographic portrayal of the dancehall icons he so admired. A Hundred album covers and scores of editorials later, the result of his passion to beautifully document the dancehall era is having revealed its evolution to a generation of music lovers through his lens. Richards has a passion for portraiture that extends far past Dancehall Culture and the Music Industry. International Athletes, Artists, Politicians, Models, Scholars, Business Leaders; everyday people have all played a part in defining his career. William prides himself on his affable nature and the fact that many often find themselves able to quickly relax and reveal a facet of their personality on set. “In order for the viewer to connect with my subject, I must first do so… Much of what I do lies not in composition and lighting, but in creating a mood in which the photographed forgets about the camera and the lights and just projects self...” Richards’ preference for location work and his love of Jamaica have earned him the distinction as the most prolific dancehall/reggae album photographer of recent years. Additionally, many fashion and ad agency creatives find the aesthetic he injects into his music industry work a refreshing and innovative alternate to a more commercial approach. Richards’ distinctive use of lighting and saturated colours incorporates his beloved Caribbean palate into his images. His enthusiasm to constantly broaden his horizons and perfect his craft, has left an indelible mark in the archives of the industry that has embraced and nurtured his development. 1/1 Summer Clarke Visual Artist, Production Coordinator Summer is a highly versatile creative professional with over a decade of experience spanning the visual arts, corporate administration and event & production management. She brings a rare blend of artistry, strategic thinking and operational excellence to every project she undertakes. Her career reflects both breadth and depth: from providing high-level executive support to CEOs and managing end-to-end projects, to creating commissioned artworks and collaborating on international productions. She has worked with organizations such as Jamaica Producers Group Ltd., the Bob Marley Group of Companies and Higher Intelligence Agency LLC, while also building a thriving freelance practice as a visual artist and illustrator. Summer’s creative portfolio includes partnerships with FUJI TV (Japan), JP Farms/Tropical Foods, P.S.O.J. and Tricera Art. • GALLIVANT: A Travelogue | SIIM World

Gallivant is a creative memoir in poems, postcards, sketches, and recipes—chronicling the solo journey that sparked the SIIM lifestyle brand. BUY FULL COLOR HARDCOVER BUY ON AMAZON THE BACKSTORY A journey sparked it, but a creative life made it real—designing spaces, fashion, food and stories with love as the ultimate reflections of freedom and self-discovery. Watch video Before there was a brand—or even the thought of one—there was a trip. That trip became a trod, and that trod turned into a year-long deep dive into unfamiliar lands and the uncharted corners of a young woman’s spirit. That, is Gallivant. Along the way, every experience left an imprint—from the shapes of buildings and flavors of street food to moments of stillness and wild bursts of joy. What began as a journey sparked a lifelong obsession with discovery and design, where food, fashion, spaces, events, and even words became ways to express freedom, adaptability, and self-reinvention. The clothing itself? Each piece is rooted in a place, a feeling, a flash of insight—worn memories reimagined as style. BRIGITT HOOSANG HR CONSULTANT, JAMAICA Unputdownable! Read more... FIELD NOTES On the Book... Step into the last years of the 20th century, when a young Jamaican woman from Kingston set off to gallivant across the globe—with no set itinerary and plenty of curiosity. From Japan to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and beyond, she plunged into lands and cultures that felt as strange and distant as another planet. Armed with her journal, camera, and a taste for adventure (and delicious food), she wandered solo for nearly a year, living on the edge of the unexpected. Through poems, postcards, random musings, sketches and photographs, she chronicled her journey of self-discovery, cultural surprises, and changing perspectives. As she sought out cozy stays, bold flavors, and new horizons, she came to understand that embracing our humanity means honoring the roots that shape us while embracing the freedom to grow beyond them—a balance that drives both personal and collective evolution. For anyone craving stories of unplanned adventure, travel inspiration, or the relatable ups and downs of solo exploration, Gallivant offers a humorous, heartfelt look at finding oneself across borders and time zones. On the Author... SIIM is a Jamaican architect, creative director, and fashion designer based in Kingston, Jamaica. She consults at the intersection of architecture, interior design, event architecture, and brand identity, with a specific focus on creating brand relevant experiential designs. With over twenty years of experience managing small and medium-scale construction projects in a design/build capacity, SIIM also has a special interest in the fleeting and temporal nature of film projects, and has worked as Art Director on several international feature films. Additionally, she is an avid gardener, an adventurous cook and a dog-mom with an enduring wanderlust. Learn more PRAISE FOR GALLIVANT - LONGREADS "Such a treat! Talk about living vicariously! Gallivant shares the adventures you always wished to experience, but for one reason or another was unable to… especially if you are older. I’m a non-reader and I could not put the book down! SiiM’s stories of her travels are captivating and delightful. I became enthralled by her experiences of living on the other side of the world. Her conversational writing style takes you with her to every destination. Plus she teaches you to make some amazing dishes as well! Could not ask for more. Belly full!" Tracey-Anne Thompson Administrative Assistant, Jamaica "Gallivant is a captivating read. The author does a fantastic job of painting vivid pictures of the places she’s visited and illustrating the enthralling experiences of her adventures, drawing you in from the very start. The writing style is light, fun, and amusing, making it an easy, enjoyable read. I also love how the recipes are seamlessly woven into the story - it adds depth and makes the experience feel complete." Summer Clarke Project Manager, Jamaica "The author's voice took me on a journey of proud laughter & joy, through the cultural lens of our mutual homeland. SiiM took one for the team... carrying me to places where my passport hasn't had a chance to reach yet. Every traveler with an international mindset should own a copy, not only Jamaicans!" Marie Joan McMorris Business Strategist, USA "Unputdownable! I was enthralled. SiiM made her journey come to life for me, and yet, kept me close to home. As though we were travelling hand in hand. A must read! Such a pleasure of the heart and senses. A treasure." Brigitt HooSang Human Resources Consultant, Jamaica "Having been a close friend of SiiM since our precocious pre-teen years, reading this book felt like flipping through a cherished scrapbook of postcards, each page stamped with her unmistakable wit and sense of adventure. Her stories, spanning quiet, sunlit mornings in Jamaica to the bustling streets of Paris and Cambodia, transported me back to the days when her postcards would arrive, brimming with stories of misadventures, culinary discoveries, and reflections as sharp as they were endearing. This book is more than a collection of travel stories and recipes; it’s a celebration of the way SiiM experiences the world—with unfiltered curiosity, a generous dose of irreverence, and an unmistakable passion for life. Her voice leaps off the page, pulling you into hidden corners, vibrant markets, and lively city centers, inviting you to laugh, ponder, and marvel alongside her. For anyone who loves to travel, cook, or simply revel in a life well-lived, this book is a treasure. For me, it’s a love letter from a friend who never fails to remind me of the joy of wandering and the magic of truly savoring the world. Take a bow, Siim—you’ve outdone yourself once more!"
